The Dominion Government, led by Alexander Mackenzie, passed an act in Parliament in 1874 to establish a military college "for the purpose of providing a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to thorough knowledge of the military profession."
On June 1, 1876, the Military College of Canada was founded and opened its doors to the first class of eighteen officer cadets.
"The Royal Military College of Canada Degrees Act, 1959," passed by the 25th Ontario Legislature and given Royal Assent on March 26, 1959, empowers the College to confer degrees in Arts, Science, and Engineering.
RMC now offers a wide variety of programmes in these three areas, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels offered both on site through traditional studies, and by distance learning.
In 2026, RMC will mark the sesquicentennial anniversary of its opening.
T
The Administration Building was opened in 1878. It was renamed the Mackenzie Building in honour of Canada’s second Prime Minister, Alexander Mackenzie, the founder of the Royal Military College of Canada.
Alexander Mackenzie was the founder of the College. In spite of the dislike of his many followers for standing armies, he personally rejected permanent militia schools in favour of a cadet college to produce career officers. He probably regarded this as the first logical step towards providing Canada with an effective military force.
The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is part of the re-focused Canadian Defence Academy (CDA), which continues to exist now as an ‘education group’ composed of RMC, Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean), the Canadian Forces College (CFC), and the Chief Warrant Officer Robert Osside Profession of Arms Institute; with the mandate to uphold distinction in the Profession of Arms.
As per its 2003 Charter, CDA exists to champion lifelong learning, and to promote the professional development of members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). CDA will continue to devote efforts to ensure that the CAF Profession of Arms and Professional Development System remains credible and affordable.
The Royal Military College of Canada is a military university.
It is a unique national military university that provides the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with exemplary officers to serve Canada, delivering undergraduate programs in the Social Sciences, the Humanities, Science and Engineering in both official languages.
RMC offers 20 exceptional undergraduate programmes that each include a core curriculum to 1,200 students that is directly connected to the profession of arms.
RMC is an important national institution living up to the tradition that sets RMC apart from other Canadian universities. It produces military leaders ready to serve with distinction, producing graduates well-exposed both culturally and academically to a military ethos, and who have the skill sets essential for success as leaders representing Canada internationally.
RMC aspires to a positive environment built on clarity and unity of purpose, creating a harmonious atmosphere by behaving with integrity and by treating people with respect. It is a military university that embraces its institutional culture and values while respecting diversity.
But RMC not only produces military leaders - it is also a leader in defence research, responding to the research needs of the Defence and security community, and Canadian society. RMC’s research activities are inspired by a culture of discovery and innovation that is inquiry-based. They lead to the generation, transfer and sharing of knowledge, especially that which is relevant to Defence and security. RMC is pursuing, generating and transferring knowledge; inspiring and motivating faculty and students.
RMC has state-of-the-art research facilities uniquely located on its campus such as a nuclear reactor, wind tunnels, an anechoic chamber, an observatory, an ammunition lab, a civil engineering lab, and a cyber-lab, to name a few. Some of our research is sensitive or classified and is often conducted at RMC in direct support of operations.
Recognized nationally and internationally as a military university of academic excellence, RMC delivers education of the highest quality at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and in specialized professional development.

About NOSM University
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), created in 2002, made history by becoming Canada’s first independent medical university—now known as NOSM University—on April 1, 2022.
NOSM University is one of the greatest medical education success stories of Canada. Born of a grassroots movement, NOSM University is a made-in-the-North solution to regional health care inequalities. Its internationally recognized distributed, community-engaged learning (DCEL) model is distinctive and has grown into something extraordinary.
This education model requires NOSM University to have strong ties and engagement with remote, rural, Indigenous and Francophone communities. It features partnerships and collaborations with more than 500 organizations, in more than 90 communities, and with more than 1,800 clinical, human, and medical sciences faculty dispersed across all of Northern Ontario.
In addition to offering a Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) fully accredited MD program, NOSM University offers a Master of Medical Studies, Dietetic Practicum Program (DPP), Medical Physics Residency Education Program (MPREP), Physician Assistant (PAs), and Postgraduate Residency programs accredited by both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
NOSM University has a mandate to be socially accountable to the cultural diversity of the region it serves including Indigenous and Francophone peoples, remote communities, small rural towns, large rural communities, and urban centres. Evidence of this mandate can be found in the University’s curriculum, administrative structure, research program, student demographics, continuing education program, and more.
NOSM University faculty, staff and students do not function in a traditional medical school building. Rather, the walls of the University are the boundaries of Northern Ontario, spanning thousands of kilometres, with two main campuses and countless communities that are linked in some way to the University.
Canada’s First Stand-Alone Medical University
On June 3, 2021, the Government of Ontario passed legislation to make the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) a university. With this status, NOSM becomes the first stand-alone medical university in Canada.
NOSM was established as a government strategy to address the health needs of the region, improve access to quality care, and contribute to the economic development of Northern Ontario. It was born of a grassroots movement, from communities across Northern Ontario advocating for a solution to regional health inequalities. Becoming a university translates that vision into a reality in the future.
MD Program- As of June 2024, NOSM University has graduated 971 MDs—80 are Indigenous and 198 are Francophone. More than half of these physicians have stayed in Northern Ontario.
- On average, 52.67% of NOSM MD grads select Family Medicine as their first choice for residency, compared with 38.20% for all Canadian applicants.
- All NOSM University medical students have a first-year placement in what is called Integrated Community Experience (ICE). This is a mandatory four-week placement in a First Nation community, a Métis organization, or an Indigenous health organization in Northern Ontario.
Residency Programs- As of June 2023, 827 residents have completed training in NOSM University’s residency programs.
Accolades for NOSM University- NOSM University is a proud recipient of the 2019 Charles Boelen International Social Accountability Award, presented by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada.
- In 2013, NOSM University received the prestigious ASPIRE award, which recognizes international excellence in social accountability and medical education.
- NOSM University has been honoured by the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada with the Rural Medical Education Award 11 times for the highest proportion of graduates going into rural family medicine.
Dietetic Practicum Program- To date, NOSM University has graduated 207 learners who go on to become Registered Dietitians. Notably, 75% of our last three graduate cohorts are practising in Northern Ontario.

18:1 ratio student/prof
Small class-sizes promote interaction among students and professors, creating positive group dynamics, and giving students greater access to labs, and more one-on-one conversations. It’s a personal approach to university education and it works. Approachable, accessible faculty and crucial support programs offered through the Centre for Academic Excellence, ensure each student is on the road to academic success.
Flexible Degrees with Customization options
At Laurentian, the added flexibility of customizing your degree to include concentrations, minors, majors and specializations allows students to differentiate themselves in the workforce. The extra credits in the speciality of choice can often be the determinant factor in the hiring process. By providing these options, Laurentian sets the stage for successful graduates who are passionate about their future.
A bilingual edge
Laurentian’s Sudbury campus offers the added advantage of an ideal environment to learn a second language. More than 30 of our programs are offered in both official languages. Students can opt to take courses in either French or English, and can earn a certificate of bilingualism in the process.
95% Post-graduation Employment Rate
With the highest post-graduation employment rate of all universities in Ontario – 95% – Laurentian represents a sound investment in your future.
