China will ratchet up resources to advance the construction of the 5G network, expand the application of 5G technology in various fields, and promote the research and development of 6G, officials and experts said at the 6th Digital China Summit, which ended on Friday in Fuzhou, Fujian province.
Zhao said the ministry will make more efforts to bolster the building of the 5G network in an orderly manner and accelerate its industrial applications, push forward the R&D of 6G, and strengthen international exchange and communication in 5G-related technology, standards and application.
"China has built the world's largest 5G network with the most advanced technologies. The number of the country's 5G base stations had exceeded 2.64 million by the end of March this year," said Zhao Ce, deputy head of the information and telecommunications development department at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The superfast 5G wireless technology has been used in 52 of the 97 major economic categories, with large-scale application expanded to mining, ports and electricity, he said. Moreover, China has already established the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, a flagship platform in China promoting 6G and international cooperation.
As 5G technology serves as a critical foundation supporting the development of artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, heightened efforts should be made to explore application scenarios of 5G and empower the transformation of traditional industries, said Zhang Wang, deputy head of the informatization development bureau of the Cyberspace Administration of China.
China has recently unveiled a plan for the overall layout of the country's digital development, vowing to make important progress in the construction of a digital China by 2025, with effective interconnectivity in digital infrastructure, a significantly improved digital economy, and major breakthroughs achieved in digital technology innovation.
"As the next-generation mobile communication technology, 6G integrates with telecommunication, perception, computation, artificial intelligence, big data and security," said Cui Chunfeng, president of the future research institute of the China Mobile Research Institute, adding the research on 6G is still at a preliminary stage worldwide.
Cao Ming, president of the wireless product line at Huawei Technologies, said China is taking the lead in 5G development across the globe, and 5G is expected to play a bigger role in bolstering digitalization in a wide range of sectors covering intelligent connected vehicles and intelligent transportation.
Although there is no universally accepted definition of 6G, the technology is predicted to provide faster speeds, lower latency and more bandwidth than 5G. The 6G network will realize the deep integration of physical and virtual worlds, and build a new world featuring the intelligent connection of everything, Cui said.
Noting new cybersecurity challenges have popped up with the rapid development and application of 5G technology, Qi Xiangdong, chairman of Chinese cybersecurity company Qi-Anxin Technology Group, said the company will strengthen cooperation with the country's major telecom carriers to help them deal with growing cybersecurity risks.
Qi said China's cybersecurity industry has maintained annual growth rate of 15 to 20 percent, while calling for efforts to increase investment in talent training and enhancing security awareness among netizens.
China's official purchasing managers index for the manufacturing sector returned to the expansion territory at 50.2 in September, increasing for the fourth consecutive month and pointing to an uptick in economic momentum, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Saturday.
September's PMI reading was up from 49.7 in August as production accelerated while market demand improved, the bureau said. The sub-indexes for production and new orders came in at 52.7 and 50.5 in September, respectively, up from 51.9 and 50.2 in August.
The non-manufacturing PMI also increased from 51 a month earlier to 51.7 in September as activity in the services and construction sectors accelerated. The composite PMI, which includes both manufacturing and non-manufacturing activities, came in at 52 in September compared with 51.3 in August, indicating a pickup of enterprises' production and operation activities.
Nevertheless, Zhao Qinghe, an NBS statistician, said the recovery of the manufacturing sector still faces headwinds as the proportion of manufacturers reporting heightened industry competition, high raw material costs and tight cash flow increased in September.
Price levels also recovered due to rising commodity prices and revival of company purchasing activity, with the sub-gauges of raw material prices and ex-factory prices both hitting the highest level this year at 59.4 and 53.5, respectively, according to the NBS.
"Going forward, it is necessary to focus on implementing the policy measures that have been introduced and bringing their effects into play to further consolidate the continuously improving economic conditions," Zhao said.

Due to its status as the longest-running capital in ancient China and for giving birth to most dynasties, Xi'an, with a history of over 3,000 years, has had a deep impact on the life and culture of the country.
Home to the Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an enjoys a reputation as a "Living History Museum" due to its rich, diverse collection of historical and cultural treasures.
The upcoming China-Central Asia Summit is to be held in Xi'an. If you are planning a tour of Xi'an taking less than 3 days, you’ll want to hit all the highlights. Check out these recommended attractions, which we think best capture the spirit of the ancient city.
1 The Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army is not just China's premier historical attraction, it is one of the most significant archeological finds in the world and one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century.
Discovered in 1974, the army of Terracotta Warriors was constructed by China's First Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-207 BC). It is a collection of thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, horses and chariots in battle formation, showing the emperor’s armies in full splendor.
The Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum consists of three vaults and an exhibition hall: Vault One, Vault Two, Vault Three and the Exhibition Hall of the Bronze Chariots. Of the three pits, Pit 1 is the largest and the most impressive, with over 6,000 terracotta figures in total and fewer than 2,000 on regular display. Each figure differs in facial features and expressions, clothing, hairstyle and also body position. Through this exquisite detail, people can get great insight into the history, military development and culture of ancient China in that period.
2 Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
One of China's most famous Buddhist pagodas, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) for the study of Buddhist scriptures. One of the main functions of the pagoda was to store sutras and figurines brought to China from India by the famous monk and traveler Xuan Zang, who stayed here for 19 years translating Buddhist scriptures.
Situated in Da Ci'en Temple, the pagoda was built with layers of bricks and has a grand structure that gives it a solemn appearance. It is exemplary of traditional Chinese architecture.
3 Ancient City Wall
Xi'an City Wall was built in the 14th century by Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) as a military defense system. Now it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Chinese city walls. The wall is now a landmark, dividing the city into inner and outer areas. When you take a stroll or cycle on the massive wall, you can enjoy a good view of the city, the moat and the watchtowers.
4 Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is home to over 370,000 precious relics unearthed in Shaanxi over the years. Its collections range from bronze wares to pottery figures, gold and silverwares and mural paintings from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) tombs. Among its precious collections, 18 pieces have been listed as national treasures.
Serving as the capital of China for 13 dynasties, Xi'an is endowed with numerous historical sites and relics.
The museum consists of three main sections, displayed chronologically from primitive eras to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
5 The Muslim Quarter
Another highlight when touring Xi'an is its local snacks, and the best food destination is the Muslim Quarter.
Consisting of a number of food streets, the area has become a famous attraction in the city for its rich and authentic Muslim cultural atmosphere. Taking a stroll along the Muslim Quarter, you could find unending lines for various restaurants and food stalls, where you can get a taste of the culture of the Hui ethnic group that lives there. Remember to get a bowl of pita bread soaked in lamb soup. And don't forget to save some room for the roujiamo meat sandwich, a signature snack of Xi'an. It is a handy delicacy to eat on the go as you rush to your next destination.
